While everyone prepares for the World Cup, Wales have been participating in the China Cup, where they defeated China 6-0 in Ryan Giggs’ first-ever match as Wales boss. Gareth Bale stole the headlines with a hat-trick that made him his nation’s all-time top goalscorer, overtaking Ian Rush.
Butland relishing goalkeeping trial
Much has been made of England’s goalkeeping situation as Gareth Southgate’s men prepare for this summer’s World Cup. Jordan Pickford has been given the nod so far, but with Jack Butland, Joe Hart and Nick Pope waiting in the wings, the fight for the number one spot is on. Butland has come out this week and explained that the England keeper trial can only be positive – ‘Whoever is selected comes in off a battle, which is what you want’ – as he prepares to stake his claim against Italy.

Poor old Sunderland. The North East club have had a horrid time of it in recent years. Relegation from the Premier League last year looks as though it could be followed up this year with relegation from the Championship. Owner Ellis Short has been open about his desire to sell the club, but has so far struggled to find a suitor. Could club legend Niall Quinn be about to end the club’s nightmare spell? It’s been reported that he is heading up a consortium that wants to buy the club off of Short.

Former Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel is one of the hottest properties in Europe at the moment and talk has increased over the weekend of the German manager’s next move. It has been reported that he has rejected Bayern Munich in favour of a move abroad, with Arsenal mooted.
